A doctor from Poland has been elected for the first time to the position of the medical director of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships

International Ski Federation (FIS) during its meeting in Barcelona elected Stanisław Szymanik M.D. to the position of the medical director of the Nordic World Ski Championships which will take place in Falun (Sweden) in 2015. This is another prestigious and responsible function entrusted to the chief physician of the orthopedic and trauma department of St. Raphael’s Hospital belonging to Scanmed Multimedis Group from Krakow.

– I perceive this appointment not as my personal success but first and foremost as a significant achievement and recognition for Polish sports medicine. For the first time in history is it happening that a doctor from our country has become a medical director of one of the largest sports events in the world – says Stanisław Szymanik, M.D., Scanmed Multimedis S.A.

The medical director of the event is responsible for supervision over the work of medical teams of particular representations, drug tests of contenders as well as evaluation of medical cover for the event.

Stanisław Szymanik, M.D. is the Chief Physician of the Orthopedic Department at St. Raphael’s Hospital. He directs daily functioning of the Centre for Arthroscopic Surgery and Sports Trauma at St. Raphael’s Scanmed Hospital in Krakow, which provides comprehensive medical care for persons professionally or recreationally practicing various sports disciplines. The Centre specializes inter-alia in arthroscopic surgeries of shoulder, elbow, hip and knee joints and in minimally-invasive endoprosthesis- plasty.

Since 2011 Stanisław Szymanik, M.D.has been a member of the FIS Medical Board. Until now he has occupied a position of the Medical Director of the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships (Otepa, Estonia 2011) and Alpine Junior World Ski Championships (Jasna, Slovakia, 2014).
